Jamaica offers strong value proposition for outsourcing
Today’s Jamaica is a highly competitive and attractive business destination, which has emerged as the leading contact center location in the English-speaking Caribbean with more than 10,000 full-time agents in the offshore business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.
The country boasts an established track record in finance and accounting, human resource outsourcing and other areas, and since 2008 has been identified by Gartner – the world’s leading information technology research and advisory firm – as a destination to watch. Jamaica is the only English-speaking country in the Caribbean included in the top 50 destinations for outsourcing activities by AT Kearney (2011). Kingston, Jamaica’s capital city, was ranked fifth out of 22 BPO locations in Latin America and the Caribbean by business development analytics firm Zagada Institute in the first quarter of 2011.
With nearshore access to the United States, neutral English accent, low attrition rates and high labor force availability among secondary and university graduates (more than 20 percent), Jamaica provides great value to anyone looking for a BPO destination. This value proposition is bolstered by average call center and BPO salaries being 40 to 60 percent lower than the corresponding salaries in the USA.
These advantages, as well as the fact the government’s strong support for ICT/BPO as a priority sector, have kept industry heavyweights such ACS (Xerox), Teleperformance and West Corporation operating in the island for almost a decade.
Projects have been conceptualized with dedicated ICT facilities, such as the Caymanas ICT Park and the Barnett Tech Park. Caymanas is being proposed as a private-public partnership, with 40 acres of the St. Catherine property being allocated to ICT. The Barnett Tech Park is being positioned as private sector ICT free zone on a 46-acre property in Montego Bay. Equity investment stands at US$1.8 million, and ICT firm VistaPrint has already begun constructing its Caribbean headquarters on the site.
